Flam Taps [6-12-06]
If you can play flams ok from the previous lesson (introduction to flams) then Flam Taps should be fairly easy to you. All you have to do is play a soft tap stroke in-between each flam. As we practice and become better we may find that we can just bounce the stick when we play the accent, so the tap becomes part of the one movement. Below is the "flam tap"

Remember to practice it slowly and get that second tap on time with your metronome. It is very crucial that your timing is not affected by the flam or the tap. We want to work on getting a consistent time with all the notes. Make it sound flowing!
Drum set application: Many drummers fail to take advantage of the Flam Tap when it comes to playing the kit. The Flam Tap sounds great when applied to the drum set!
Just take the above pattern and play it in these ways:
1- On the snare drum or tom as written.
2- Play all grace notes on your snare and all primary notes and taps on your toms.
3- Play all grace notes on your snare and all primary notes and taps on your ride cymbal or hi-hat.
4- Play all right stick parts with your kick drum foot and left stick parts with your left stick on the snare or tom.
5- Experiment and come up with your own unique fill ideas!
